With the theme “Technology and Indie Films”, this year’s Cinemalaya Campus film fora will be held from 9:15am – 2:30pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Little Theater. The event focuses on the current film technology that is available both for student and professional filmmakers, discussions on various shooting equipment, from the ubiquitous cellphone to the more advanced high-end cameras, sessions on sound recording, post-production, particularly editing and color grading. A session will be devoted to the work of contemporary screenwriters as well. Cinemalaya Campus consists of 7 sessions led by event Co-Directors Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo and Eva Mari DG. Salvador, CCP Arts Education Department Manager. Among the speakers invited to the event are film industry practitioners such as directors Joey Reyes, Zig Dulay and Gino Santos, cinematographer Neil Daza, sound designer and musical scorer Corinne De San Jose, Teresa Barrozo and Mike Idioma, colorist Marilen Magsaysay, actresses Aiza Seguerra, Liza Diño and Ina Feleo.
Digital Classics. The digitally restored and re-mastered 1977 film classic Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising by Mike de Leon will be screened at 12:45pm at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute (CCP Studio Theater). It stars Christopher De Leon, Hilda Koronel, Laurice Guillen, Moody Diaz, Danny Javier, Boboy Garovillo, Bibeth Orteza, Briccio Santos, Oya de Leon, Archie Corteza, Erwin Kilip, Jayjay de los Santos, Bert Miranda, Don Escudero and Sally Santiago.
The Tribute to Francis Pasion honors the life and work of the late Cinemalaya director who passed away in March 2016. His films Sampaguita (2010 Cinemalaya Special Jury Prize) and Bakit Tinutuhog Ang Sampaguita (1999) will be shown at 3:30pm at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde in this retrospective.
Focus: Jaclyn Jose. Cinemalaya shines the spotlight on 2016 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Jaclyn Jose featuring her critically-acclaimed film Itanong mo sa Buwan (1988) by Chito Roño at 6:15 pm at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde. The film is about a married bank teller who gets caught up in a bungled bank robbery and gets taken as a hostage. The film also stars Mark Gil, Anjo Yllana, Anita Linda, Tita Muñoz, Mia Gutierrez, Lucita Soriano and Susan Africa. Focus: Jaclyn Jose is a tribute to Filipino artistry and world class talent as exemplified by Jose. She is the first Filipina to win the Cannes Film Festival Best Actress award. She was awarded the prize for her portrayal of a drug-dealing matriarch in a Manila slum in the film Ma Rosa by Brillante Mendoza.
Dagsin by Renato Magadia, Jr. will have its gala premiere at 6:15pm at the CCP Main Theater. The film is a beautiful and touching love story about courageous people, who are willing to sacrifice everything to protect their loved ones against the tragedies of human existence. Dagsin stars Tommy Abuel, Lotlot De Leon, Benjamin Alves, Janine Gutierrez, Sue Prado, Alex Diaz, Marita Zobel, Yoshihiko Hara, Rolando Inocencio, and Arpee Bautista.
Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, the Cultural Center of the Philippines in partnership with Ayala Malls Cinemas. Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival and competition that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.
In addition to the main Festival venue at the CCP, Cinemalaya is held in Ayala Theaters in Greenbelt 3 and Glorietta, Makati, Fairview Terraces, TriNoma, and UP Town Center, Quezon City and Solenad, Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. In Cebu, Cinemalaya is held at the Ayala Center Cebu on August 9-14.
