THURSDAY, August 11, at the 12th Cinemalaya Film Festival offers the gala premiere the short films in group A, namely:  Bugtaw by Noah del Rosario, Ang Maangas, Ang Marikit at Ang Makata by Jose Ibarra Guballa, Mansyong Papel by Ogos Aznar, Nakauwi Na by John Relano, Patrick Baleros and Luis Hidalgo and Pektus by Isabel Quesada.  The event is scheduled at 6:15pm at the CCP Main Theater.

Lino Brocka’s Cain at Abel will be featured in the Digital Classics section of the Festival.  Slated at 9pm at the CCP Little Theater, the film is a despotic mother Doña Pina (Mona Lisa) who favors her younger son Elis (Christopher De Leon) over her other son Lorenz (Phillip Salvador), consequently promoting sibling rivalry between the brothers. The tension between brothers Elis and Lorenz grows into an armed conflict.

Also in the cast are:  Carmi Martin, Baby Delgado, Cecille Castillo, Ruel Vernal, Michael Sandico, Venchito Galvez, Tonio Gutierez.

The Tribute to Director Francis Xavier Pasion continues with the screening of Jay at 3:30pm at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde. “Jay” is the name of the two protagonists in the film. Jay Santiago is a gay TV producer documenting the family of a gay hate crime victim who happens to be his namesake, Jay Mercado. In the process of production for his TV program, Jay Santiago intrudes into the private grief of the other Jay’s family and he is drawn to the secret life and love of his subject.  A multi-awarded film director and sought-after television director, Pasion won two Cinemalaya Best Awards in 2014 for Bwaya and in 2008 for Jay and the Special Jury Prize for Sampagita in 2010.  Pasion passed away in March 2016.

In the Festival’s Best section, Manang Biring by Carl Joseph Papa will be screened at 9pm at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute.  Manang Biring is a dark comedy-drama about a feisty, terminally ill old lady who has long accepted her imminent passing due to stage-4 breast cancer but then receives an unexpected letter from an estranged loved one announcing their return for Christmas. The film won Best Film, Best Musical Score, and Champion Bughaw Award at the Cinema One Originals Film Festival, 2015.

The Indie Nation section features Mel Chionglo’s Iadya Mo Kami (Deliver Us) at 6:15pm at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde while Panoptika section offers two documentaries at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde —Headhunting William Jones by Collis H. Davis Jr. at 12:45pm and Dahling Nick by Sari Dalena at 9pm.

Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, the Cultural Center of the Philippines in partnership with Ayala Malls Cinemas.  Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival and competition that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.
