AFTER the success of “Love Sings!” and “T’aint Opera!”, Philippine Opera Company's Young Artists' Series (YAS) Season 2018-2019 in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and The Friends of the Philippine Opera Foundation present “Oh Mario!” on November 14, 2018 at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) Lobby at 7pm.
“Oh Mario!” is a special celebration concert honoring the life and times of Mario Lanza, the most famous tenor the world has ever known.
The greatest tenors of the modern era - Pavarotti, Carreras, Domingo and Bocelli - all trace their inspiration back to Lanza who became the first true crossover artist when MGM made him a matinee idol during the 1950s with box office hits such as The Toast of New Orleans, The Great Caruso and The Student Prince. One gold disc followed another with operatic arias and pop hits such as The Loveliest Night of the Year, Because, Che Gelida Manina, Golden Days and his signature ballad, Be My Love. Lanza was idolized, but, within ten years, his star had burned itself out and, sadly, Mario’s career was cut short by his death at the age of 38.
"Oh Mario!" will relive the magic of Lanza’s greatest hits, including all of his biggest songs and duets such as “Serenade”, “Drink, Drink, Drink”, “Deep In My Heart”, “Ave Maria”, “Summertime in Heidelberg”, “Be My Love”, “O Sole Mio”, “Because You’re Mine” and many more.
Young Artists’ Series is a branch of Philippine Opera Company where the company produces fresh, vibrant opera with a twist, delighting audiences and providing a platform for the stars of tomorrow. It provides a professional training ground for young classical singers in the art and craft of stage performance. It gives them the opportunity to integrate singing with stage acting, diction, repertoire, script analysis, dance & movement, and understand better the use of production elements. The goal is to furnish them with a solid foundation on which to build a sustainable performance career. It aims to promote the growth of Philippines's budding opera talent by providing professional development activities and a series of concert and corporate events and, importantly, performance opportunities in the Young Artists' Season.
The concert is invitational.
