THE Cultural Center of the Philippines is proud to present Flight Season, its first venue grant exhibition for 2020, opening on March 21 at the CCP’s Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco (Little Theater Lobby). Flight Season is a solo exhibit by Bulacan-based artist Don Bryan Bunag.

For his first show at the CCP, Bunag tackles the intersection of his childhood memories and the impending development in his hometown through a large-scale installation at the CCP’s Little Theater Lobby.  Making use of the imagery of kites, Bunag grapples with nostalgia for the fleeting and the realities that the future brings, specifically, the creation of the New Manila International Airport in 2,400 hectares of land in Bulakan, Bulacan.

Flight Season is curated by Ricky Francisco, who ponders in his exhibit essay, “Using memory and pride of place, Flight Season shows active concern for how a major development can change place, people, ecosystem and ultimately, culture…With the vast changes that will happen to Bulakan, Bulacan, whose flight will mark the sky?  How will it change the relationship of man to the seasons and to the Earth?  What kind of memories will the future children have?  How will children socialize and bond with their peers when the public, communal spaces are gone?  What of the bond between Bulakan’s fathers and sons?”

Don Bryan Bunag was born in 1993 in Bulakan, Bulacan. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Major in Visual Communication from the Bulacan State University in 2014, where he also taught from 2015 to 2017.  He gained top honors in various art competitions including the PhilPost Papal Stamp Design Competition (2014), Everyone’s Vision Petron National Student Art Competition (2012 and 2013), Cocolife Colors of Life National Student Competition (2013), and most recently, the Grant Prize in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition in 2015.

Flight Season exhibit runs from March 21 to April 26, 2020 at the CCP Little Theater Lobby (Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm).  Hours are extended until 10pm on days with evening performances at the CCP Main Theater.

Guests are also invited to listen in on a conversation between Bunag and Francisco on April 4, 2020 (Saturday) at 3pm.
