THE Cultural Center of the Philippines pays tribute to the legacy of songwriter Bing Pimentel through a one-night-only concert, dubbed "Buhay, Pag-ibig, Dalangin: Mga Awiting Likha ni Bing Ll. Pimentel," on September 12, 7:30pm, at the CCP Main Lobby.
The concert will be a retrospective of the Pimentel's amazing body of works, as performed by the country's finest singers and performers including Isay Alvarez, Bo Cerrudo, Pow Chavez, Tex Ordoñez-de Leon, Martin Pimentel, and Dulce.
The tribute concert will be directed by Dennis Marasigan, with Maestro Herminigildo Ranera as musical director.
Known as one of the country's most prolific songwriters, Bing Pimentel has composed approximately 100 songs, which are mostly religious hymns, inspirational ballads, and love songs which she often wrote with her husband, former Senator Nene Pimentel, in mind.
One of her unforgettable songs is "Pag-ibig Sa Bayan," which was popularized by singer Freddie Aguilar. She composed the song, which was included in Aguilar's full-length album "Kamusta Ka," when her husband was imprisoned during the Martial Law.
Her song "Hinahanap-hanap Kita," which was recorded by singer Dulce, speaks about her longing for her husband while they were apart. Forty years ago, back when they had yet to get married, Bing worked and lived in Malaybalay, Bukidnon, while her would-be husband Nene was in Manila reviewing for the bar exams.
Her other songs include "Only A Moment" which was also recorded by Dulce, "Bakit Kaya" which she composed for actress Nora Aunor, "Loving You," a song she composed when her husband got into a car accident on his way to a speaking engagement, "Binibiro ng Panahon," "Whisper To Me Once More," "Why I Must Go On Living," among others.
The 80-year-old composer has created libretto and songs for original Filipino musicals "Buhay Ay Isang Awit," "Cory The Musicale," Huwag Pumayag Sa Dagdag Bawas," and "Nasaan Si Jesus," which was recently re-staged on August 18 to celebrate the birthday of Brother Mike Velarde.
Dedicated to the achievements of all senior citizens, the concert promotes "PasaLord," Bing Pimentel's latest project that aims to advocate the power of prayer to unite the country behind one goal - to pass all the happiness, worries, sorrows, joys, failures and victories to the Lord in order to glorify Him.
