The Festival is named after the founder of the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, the late National Artist for Music Andrea O. Veneracion, an esteemed choirmaster and choral clinician who was instrumental in the development of choral music all over the country. First organized in 2013, the Festival takes place every two years. On its fourth year, the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival will witness foreign and local choirs compete in three categories: Folk Song, Equal Voices and Mixed Choir.

The world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers will also be featured in a special gala concert on the opening day of the Festival. The ‘Madz’ is the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing twice (in 1997 and in 2007). In 2016, they won the Grand Prix at the 64th International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy.

The Folk Song competition will showcase the performances of Filipino choirs singing folk songs from the Philippines, the Asian region, and from outside of the Asian region; and foreign choirs singing folk songs from their home country, from another country in their region and from the Philippines. The Equal Voices competition will see choirs sing a minimum of four songs that include one from the Renaissance/Early Baroque Period, one from the Romantic Period, one from the 20th – 21st century, and one freely chosen piece. The Mixed Choir competition will present choirs singing period pieces: one Renaissance/Early Baroque choral work, one Romantic choral work, one 20th or 21st century choral work; and the competition (obligatory) piece.

A jury composed of five internationally renowned adjudicators – one from Europe, one from North America, one from South America, one from Africa/Australia, and one from the Philippines will evaluate the competition.

The Festival will coincide with the 1st Asia Choral Grand Prix, which will be held on the Festival’s last day, July 21, 2019. The Asia Choral Grand Prix is a competition of the top two winners of the 2017 and 2018 competitions of the following international choir festivals: the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival (Philippines), the Bali International Choir Festival (Indonesia), and the Singapore International Choral Festival (Singapore).
