DESCRIPTION

The Cultural Center of the Philippines turns 50 on September 8, 2019 and the Main Building will be declared a National Cultural Treasure. An architectural masterpiece of National Artist Leandro Locsin, the structure was one of the first major venues for the performing arts in Asia. The CCP has been the premiere showcase of the arts in the Philippines and remains peerless in its achievements in the nurturing of excellent artists, the production of high quality works and the development of audiences for the performing arts.

The history of the Cultural Center of the Philippines will be presented in BULAWAN (Gold) with a showcase of the best of Philippine art, from folk rituals and dances to modern visual arts; from literature to music. With each number, the contribution of the Center to our national identity will be shown and the collaboration of each art laid bare; from page to stage as literature becomes theater, and from thence to the grandeur of musicals and opera; from the creation of one single film to the enormous success of Cinemalaya. Going beyond entertainment and a simple showcase of talent, BULAWAN presents Philippine art as it impacts the international community. Artists who have performed at the CCP and who now grace the international stage return in a glorious homecoming. Truly the home of Philippine art and artists, the program gives a glimpse into the continuing task of the Center: the nurturing of Filipino talent and the continuous search for new voices.

BULAWAN tells the story of artistic excellence – the true, the good, and the beautiful – through the seven arts with a sampling of the best performances led by the resident companies of the CCP: Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Philippine Madrigal Singers, UST Symphony Orchestra, National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA), and Tanghalang Pilipino.

Featured guest performers include renowned artists Celeste Legaspi, Raul Sunico, Joanna Ampil, Audie Gemora, Monique Wilson, Rachelle Gerodias, Lara Maigue, Andion Fernandez, Nonie Buencamino, Gian Magdangal, Poppert Bernadas, Candice Adea and Julio Blanes through the special participation of the West Australian Ballet, Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Ligaya Amilbangsa, Madz et al – 250-voice choir, and many more!

This production is directed and designed by Loy Arcenas, with Katsch Catoy for lighting design, GA Fallarme for video projections, and Barie Tantiongco for technical direction. The orcehstra will be conducted by Herminigildo Ranera and Yoshikazu Fukumura, and the choirs will be conducted by Mark Carpio, who also acts as Music Consultant.
